Just a Weed

Today's muse: Pictures, Poetry & Prose

Just a Weed

When I was but a wee young thing—
no more than five or six—
to mother I would often bring
a bouquet that I’d picked.

I offered weeds with heads all bent;
a wide smile on my face.
She always knew how much it meant,
and placed them in a vase.

Now she’s gone and every day
I pray that I’ll be brave.
And every week I stop to lay
dandelions on her grave.

edit:

I'm sorry about your mom. I miss mine too (and it's been 36 years now).

Some things you never really get over.

Oh, Jeanne ... I'm sorry about your mom. Even more sorry that I have to say that I still have my mom. The poem is purely fiction, although, having worked in funeral service for 12 years, I can empathise. I don't think that losing a loved one is supposed to be easy or something you 'get over'. Your life is never the same ... it just evolves into a new 'normal'. Don't put pressure on yourself to not feel what you feel and don't let anyone else make you feel guilty for missing your mother after all these years. I think you should miss her ... love is what makes us human.

Monica this is very beautiful and the imagery is great. I have to catch up this weekend on your work. Have a great day!

What I love is that the mom did not poo-poo the gesture, or chastise the unearthing of weed or flower. I love that she accepted the love in the gift and placed that love front and center.

Monica...I realized today that I am not linking to sites that I follow on my blog. I kind of stet up a few links when I got started and forgot about updating them. I know that linking helps the Google ranking and I am adding your site and She Poets site to my links on my blog today. Sorry I have not done this before.

Have a great weekend.
